Cataract

Sunetra is a leading eye hospital in Ghaziabad with state-of-the-art diagnostics for Cataract. With hundreds of patients getting Cataract Surgery every month, Sunetra has garnered prominence in the medical field.

Cataracts are an opacity or clouding of the normally crystalline lens of the eye caused by the natural aging process, metabolic changes, injury, various forms of radiation, toxic chemicals, and certain drugs. As the leading cause of vision loss among adults age sixty or older, cataracts impair vision making everyday activities increasingly difficult.

In simple terms, a cataract is usually part of the normal aging process that changes the natural, clear lens of the eye into a cloudy, opaque structure that inhibits or diminishes the passage of light to the retina. The condition can be compared to a window that is frosted or “fogged” with steam.

Cataract Surgery

There has been a rapid evolution in cataract treatment over the past few years which translates to added patient benefits including improved visual outcomes and faster recoveries. Femtolaser assisted Blade free procedures And Micro Incision cataract procedures are quick outpatient procedure that corrects vision with little discomfort and rapid return to normal activities. It requires a tiny incision and breaks up the cataract with ultrasound waves. Next, a soft, flexible synthetic intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted into the lens capsule of the eye. There are premium lens options available to customize a patient’s unique vision qualifications. In most cases, the incision is so small that the eye heals rapidly with little or no discomfort. Drops are used after cataract surgery, and the patient is asked to refrain from swimming or water activity for two to four weeks.

Cataract surgery is considered one of the most popular and highly successful procedures, with improved vision occurring in over ninety percent of cases. In fact, a study by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery recently reported that more than ninety-eight percent of cataract patients had their vision successfully improved following surgery. Many patients report vision that is even better than before they developed cataracts. Results are permanent; once removed, cataracts will not recur. The implanted lens will last the lifetime of the patient.

How do I know if I have a cataract?
The following are common symptoms of a cataract:

  • Blurred vision

  • Difficulty reading

  • Dimming of vision

  • Halos around lights

  • Double vision

  • Frequent changes or cleaning of glasses

  • Difficulty with night driving

  • Glare vision problems

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, you may have a cataract. Your eye doctor should make a conclusive diagnosis.

What is a cataract?
Normally the focusing lens of the eye is crystal clear, allowing light to pass through and form a clear image on the retina. A cataract is simply the clouding or discoloration of the lens. Light passing through the cataract (or cloudy lens) is blocked or distorted and results in a blurred or dimmed image on the retina. Unless congenital or caused by injury, cataracts are a normal part of the aging process, and there is no known way to prevent them from forming. Although most cataracts develop slowly, causing a gradual loss of sight, others progress more rapidly. The speed at which a cataract will develop is impossible to predict accurately.

When should surgery be performed?
Cataract surgery is advised when blurred vision interferes with normal activities such as night driving, watching TV, reading, sewing, or recognizing faces. The development of a cataract is not, in itself, an indication for surgery. Cataract surgery is an elective procedure, which can be performed when a person needs or wants better vision. The surgeon will discuss with you the results of any testing and advise cataract surgery if he thinks it would be beneficial in your particular case. When you have made the decision to proceed with cataract surgery, the operation will be scheduled at your convenience. The Sunetra Eye Center staff will explain your treatment to you and give you instructions on what to do before surgery.

What is an Intraocular Lens (IOL)?
Because cataract surgery involves removal of the focusing lens of the eye, a replacement lens must be used if the patient is to see well following surgery. An intraocular lens (IOL) is a man-made lens which is placed inside the eye after the clouded, natural lens (cataract) has been removed. Specific eye measurements will be taken pre-operatively to determine what power IOL you need. The IOL is inserted in the same place that the natural lens had been. It becomes a permanent part of the eye and requires no care. The IOL does / may not eliminate the need for eyeglasses.

Where will the surgery take place?
All of our routine eye surgery is performed on an outpatient basis in our NABH EL certified high standard, internationally technology equipped state of the art Operation Theatre suite at Sunetra Eye Centre in Ghaziabad.
